Vascular dementia: Eat this food to lower your risk of the disease and care for your brain

Dementia is the name given to a group of diseases associated with the ongoing decline of brain function.

Vascular dementia is one of the most common types of dementia.

Around 850,000 people in the UK have dementia, and numbers are increasing.

The Alzheimer’s Society predicts the number of people with dementia will rise to around one million by 2025.

Some risk factors for developing dementia can be controlled, while others can’t.

Age and genetics, for example, are factors which cannot be controlled.

However, factors like lifestyle habits, such as diet and exercise, can be controlled.

While there’s no way to completely prevent dementia from occurring, there are ways you can help reduce the risk of developing the disease by keeping healthy.

One of the most obvious ways to keep healthy is to eat a balanced diet.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, eating a Mediterranean diet can help keep both the heart and brain healthy.

A Mediterranean diet is one which includes whole grains, fruit and vegetables, fish, nuts and olive oil.

A Mediterranean diet includes relatively little red meat and focuses on unsaturated fats.

This type of diet is frequently hailed for its health benefits, as it is rich in vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.

According to the NHS, research into the Mediterranean diet has provided strong evidence it can reduce the risk of major chronic diseases.

This is because the ingredients of a Mediterranean diet can improve heart health.

In turn, having a healthy heart can promote brain health.

“What you eat may have its greatest impact on brain health through its effect on heart health,” said the Alzheimer’s Association.

“The best current evidence suggests that heart-healthy eating patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, also may help protect the brain.”

The Alzheimer’s Society advises eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables are day, while eating protein at least twice a week.

Sugar and salt should be limited as part of a healthy diet, as should saturated fat.

The Alzheimer’s Society also recommends drinking six to eight glasses of water a day.
