LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Dr. Lara Otaigbe is taking healing from the exam room to the dining room. As the physician of Southern Medical Care, Otaigbe hosted a Diabetes Lunch-and-Learn event at her practice in Lamar County on Tuesday afternoon.

She told guests that tweaking your food can make all the difference in your health, especially for those living with diabetes. Otaigbe let the crowd taste an example.

Instead of pasta, she prepared zucchini noodles, and instead of a traditional beef burger, the audience had a turkey burger with homemade dressing.

Otaigbe said Southern Medical Care's Lunch-and Learns are a way for patients to understand they are not alone in their struggle with diabetes. She said she teaches her patients how to use food as medicine.

"We prepare meals for patients to consume, and basically our focus is on heart-healthy foods that are low in calories, low in saturated fats but at the same time very nutritious and tasty," Otaigbe said.

She's planning another Diabetes Lunch-and-Learn this fall.
