Dr. Purut is a cardio surgeon at Lewis Gale. He shares that heart valve disease has become an increasing problem in recent years due to the increase in life expectancy.
More than five million Americans are diagnosed with heart valve disease each year. The disease develops as we age, as our heart valves can become lined with calcium deposits that cause the valve flaps to thicken and become stiffer.
