He Heard Him Calling: Life Story Of Dr. Alfred Heasty
Synopsis
This book highlights the personal
struggles of a young doctor who grew up on the mission field in Sudan, Africa and wanted to return to that
country to serve the people there. After an assignment on the home mission field, private practice in Conway
Springs, Kansas, earning a specialty in Psychiatry and serving on the staff of Purdue University Student
Hospital, he was given the opportunity to return to Sudan for 3 months. Because of a chance meeting with Abel
Alier, the Vice-President of South Sudan, he was asked to return to Sudan to open a former mission hospital that
had been closed because of hostilities in that land. Soon after he arrived at Nasir, his second assignment, he
was faced with great challenges. The hospital was not operational as yet but Bol, a 10-year old with a crocodile
bite, was brought to the hospital. In order to save his life Dr. Heasty had to amputate Bol’s leg. Upon discharge
from the hospital, Bol’s father who was a witchdoctor gave him to Dr. Heasty as a “GIFT”. This presented a new
kind of problem that neither Dr. Heasty nor his wife were prepared for.
